Most people are aware of the benefits of buying a brand new home – they’re cheaper to run, no major decorating jobs to do when you first move in and a blank canvas on which to make your own mark.
And, there are many more reasons why buying new makes perfect sense. However, in today’s current climate, there is less left in the pocket after moving house to buy that all important furniture to make that house a home, particularly amongst first time buyers.

Be inventive
Always scour the internet first for inspiration. You'll be amazed at all the things you'll find! It's cheaper than buying magazines, so even your research has no waste or environmental implications.
Everything doesn't have to match
Why can't you have six odd chairs around your dining table? In today’s style guides, mix ‘n’ match is certain the theme.
Turn your creative eye
Look around your house and find a place where you can relocate any old furniture, rather than getting rid of it. Spend some time thinking how you can update any pieces by repainting or reworking it. It’s a great way to use up any leftover tins of paint stored away in the cupboard or garage too.
Search your home and those of family and friends
Ask family members or friends if you could search through some of their old things for any items they don’t want or need and then let your creative juices flow.
Give curtains a second life
If you've moved house and those curtains just don't fit, use them for something else. Cover a headboard or a bedbase, make some blinds or some cushions. If they're just too short, add a contrasting band to the bottom or top.
Make do and mend
Give your upholstered furniture a makeover by sprucing it up with new fabric. With a little nip and tuck and some thought, you will be able to get an entirely renewed piece of furniture. If you feel adventurous, remove the old fabric and use it as a pattern to cut and sew new fabric covers.
Collect and create
Design with found or used materials for unique wall sculptures, furniture, lamps and accessories.
And, don’t forget the charity shops
They are a great source for pieces of old furniture and are the fraction of the price. It's all part of recycling rather than waste and, helping another good cause too.
