When life let’s you down

Having a flat tyre on your car whilst in a rush has been revealed to be one of life’s biggest little let downs, a new online survey has revealed. The survey by YouGov, for natural healthcare products specialist Nelsons, indicated that, when given the choice, 21 per cent of people polled believed that having a flat tyre caused them to feel most let down.

As well as a flat tyre, 17 per cent of people surveyed found getting told off at work to be another top ranking little let down, and 11 per cent thought a friend or partner forgetting a birthday or anniversary to be the biggest annoyance. Failing your driving test (10%) and going up a dress or jean size (10%) were also among the top five of life’s little let downs.

Life’s little let downs are everyday occurrences which can happen anywhere at any time and to any one, and if let down could leave you feeling low and miserable. Emma Wrigley*, Professional Coach, has these top tips to help improve your mood when suffering from life’s little let downs:

Call a friend or a family member and talk it through. Being connected and supported by those who care about you is usually a great tonic.

Look at your let down from a different perspective. Try thinking about how someone you greatly admire or who makes you laugh may react. It can be surprising how this can add lightness and freshness to the let down itself.

Indulge yourself a little. Whether that means some quiet relaxation time, a walk in a park, listening to your favourite music, or enjoying one of your hobbies, give yourself permission to “spoil yourself” in order to pick yourself up again. It’s healthy to think of your own needs and desires.

Reflect on a special moment in your life. It could be a wonderful holiday, a significant work or sporting achievement, or time with friends, your partner or family. Recall how you felt, sense how your mood lifts and ask yourself what it was that made you feel so good and how you can recreate more of those moments in your life.

Set yourself some simple, but thrilling goals that you can’t wait to get going on. Being back on track will turn the volume back up on your self-esteem and as you go forward you will feel stronger and happier.

Emma says, “When you feel like life is getting down, think about who you are at your best and what in life would make you feel really happy. Write it all down, draw it or make a collage of it. Look at it often and know that you are full of resources to make it real. You can make it happen!”
