Sausage Week goes with a banger as butcher and builder join forces
Sizzling good fun was had by all as Checketts and Redrow teamed up to serve up a special sausage for British Sausage Week (October 31 – November 6).
Renowned Worcestershire Butcher Checketts of Ombersley created a special recipe for the Redrow Builder’s Banger and served it up to construction workers at Earl’s Park in Worcester who put it to the taste test.
Phil Checketts, grandson of the original business founder Thomas G Checketts, said: “As we cooked the sausages on the barbecue the aroma carried around the site and we soon had a queue of hungry men waiting to sample the ‘Redrow Builder’s Banger’. It was gratifying to see them all tucking in, knowing that the sausages not only tasted good but are a good source of sustenance for manual workers.”
Sausages are an excellent source of high quality protein, and contain essential amino acids necessary for growth, maintenance and repair of body tissue, making them the ideal lunch time treat for busy builders who can burn up to 300 calories per hour on manual labour.
The Redrow Builder’s Banger is a high quality pork sausage made from a combination of hand cut outdoor reared pork, seasoned with a small amount of herbs including nutmeg and coriander to give it a distinctive slightly sweet taste.
Chris Hanks, site manager at Redrow’s Earl’s Park development, said: “The Redrow Builder’s Banger went down really well with everyone working on site. They all loved the combination of flavours as there was just the right amount of spice. Having Checketts here to cook for us boosted morale and caused a real buzz among the team who were keen to go back for seconds and even thirds with some wanting to buy the sausages to take home for their families.”
Because the Redrow Builder’s Banger went down so well with the team at Earl’s Park, Checketts have decided to add it to their popular range of sausages.
Now in its 14th year, British Sausage Week celebrates the great British Banger and promotes the range of sausages available across the country. According to The Grocer magazine it’s the most recognised week in the retailer calendar and last year generated a massive £2 million or 572 tonnes in increased sausage sales during the week itself.
Sausages were first made by the Sumerians (modern day Iraq) 5,000 years ago and are thought to have been brought to Britain by the Romans before 400 AD.
There are now more than 470 recipes and flavours for sausages in Britain.
Pauline Turnbull, sales director for Redrow Homes (Midlands), added: “Both Checketts and Redrow have an appetite for being the best and with that in mind we’re offering customers the chance to savour the delights of Checketts’ produce. Those who move in to Earl’s Park before Christmas will receive a gift of a hamper including the Redrow Builder’s Banger.”
