Shipwood - Salvaged and reimagined

Fashion for home are always on the lookout for innovative new designs, especially those with strong ecological credentials and a good story behind them. The wood that New Zealander Logan Komorowski has used to create the Shipwood range is upcycled from decommissioned South China fishing boats from the Pearl, Li, Yangtze and Huang Rivers. The timber is recycled, reimagined and combined with new materials to create a range of furniture.

The range includes reclaimed Douglas-fir and teak wood from boats as old as the early 20th century Qing Dynasty. These woods are combined with stainless steel and high-gloss MDF to create original pieces. Each piece of furniture comes with a plaque stating the age of the boat the wood has been reclaimed from and the river it sailed on, making it easy to see the origin of your own particular piece.

Sideboard

The Shipwood Sideboards mix high-gloss MDF with the reclaimed wood. One of the advantages that MDF has over solid wood is that it doesn't warp or distort over time, meaning that it will better withstand the passage of time than a real wood alternative. The strong but simple design of the frame allows the aged wood to take centre stage.

Bookshelf

The Shipwood Bookshelf is created entirely from reclaimed wood. Its slats, a typical Komorowski design feature, provide a modern counterpoint to the wood and enables books to be stacked in a variety of ways. With its aged wood and modern craftsmanship, the bookshelf provides the perfect mix of the old and new.

Table

The single stainless steel leg of the Shipwood Table takes up as little space as possible and offers an unobtrusive but strong and stylish way to hold up the table top. The combination of steel and wood is reminiscent of the materials used on the original fishing boat.

Chair

The Shipwood Chair is a beautifully designed chair, which also happens to be made from reclaimed wood. The treated old wood gives the chair a distinctive dappled impression, something that would be impossible if it was constructed from newly-felled timber. The shape itself is a signature of Komorowski's design aesthetic: angles protract and complement to create a shape that is traditional enough for you to feel at home, but modern enough to feel fresh and new.
