Last chance to get in the running with Diabetes UK
This year’s Bupa Great Manchester Run is fast approaching. If you were unable to secure a place through the online registration, Diabetes UK has some charity places still available. Sign up before Monday 7 May to get a place for only £10 and be part of something great.
Diabetes UK is the nominated charity for the Bupa Great Run Series, which includes the Bupa Great Manchester Run. Running, as well as other physical activities, can help with managing Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes more effectively, as well as helping reduce the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Across the North West there are about 345,250 people living with diabetes, in addition to around 100,000 undiagnosed. In Manchester, there are 23,534 people diagnosed with diabetes, and an estimated 4,700 people in the area who are unaware they have Type 2 diabetes. Diabetes is a serious condition that can have devastating complications, such as blindness, kidney failure, heart disease, stroke and amputation.
Salford University Psychology student, Laura Jebb, has already signed to take part in the Bupa Great Manchester Run for Diabetes UK. She was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of five, but last year, during treatment for a serious foot injury, she found out was at high risk of going blind due to a complication of her diabetes – retinopathy. Laura said: “I couldn’t think of a better way of bringing my foot back to full physical fitness than training for a 10k run, whilst also raising money for a charity I feel very passionate about. It was a huge shock when my doctors told me I could go blind, but after nine months of treatment, things are looking more positive. I am so pleased to be running the Bupa Great Manchester Run to support others with diabetes and highlight the complications that can arise.”
Diabetes UK North West Fundraising Manager, Kate McKie says: “As the nominated charity for the Bupa Great Manchester Run 2012, Diabetes UK has a few places left. As part of the Diabetes UK team, you’ll be raising money to provide information and support to local people with diabetes, as well as increasing awareness for those undiagnosed. We have plenty of support for our runners, including motivational tips and advice on how to train, as well as fundraising ideas. Sign up today, and be part of something great.”
Sign up by Monday 7 May for a £10 place, and be a part of something great. For more information on joining the Diabetes UK Bupa Great Manchester Run, visit diabetes.org.uk/bupa.
