French Eurozone crisis hits UK tour operators to Morocco

Despite being outside the Eurozone, UK tour operators to Morocco are being hit in the pocket by the economic problems affecting France.

Comments Nick Anstead, Managing Director of Specialist Morocco: “The French market has always been hugely important to Morocco and in particular cities such as Marrakech, which now offers a choice of over 1800 riads in which to stay.

“The French have simply stopped travelling, leaving thousands of riad bedrooms empty. The result of this is a price war which has seen accommodation prices drop dramatically and UK based operators that own properties in Marrakech, such as Specialist Morocco, are being dragged into it. Consequently, there has never been a more cost-effective time for UK travellers to visit Morocco. To differentiate ourselves, we are pricing our 4-star riads at 3-star prices.”

Specialist Morocco offers two properties in Marrakech, the newly opened 8-bedroomed Riad Africa and the 4-bedroomed Maison Africa which is available for groups to rent in its entirety.

The 18th century Maison Africa is located in the heart of the bustling city’s old town (Medina) and is perfect for one, two or three couples, and large family groups, sleeping 6-12 guests in four, spacious en-suite bedrooms – one of which is an Arabian Nights-style caidal tent located on the roof terrace.

The property has been lovingly restored, resulting in a luxurious and highly sought-after Marrakech home which retains many of its original features; it is furnished in a traditional Moroccan fashion with rich local fabrics, rugs, pots, metalwork and hand-made furniture. A three-night break now costs from just £75 pp based on 4 people sharing (B&B) or £38 pp with 8 sharing.

Riad Africa is a traditionally-built property which has been carefully restored using the best local materials and decorated with African artefacts. Its central palm-filled courtyard also boasts one of the largest dipping pools in the Medina (some 16 square metres) plus there is a tropical roof terrace with sunbeds for relaxation.

The property also has its own Hammam and massage room with a range of bookable treatments. A three-night break now costs from £59 pp (2 sharing, B&B basis).
