Myanmar is now the number one destination in Asia for travellers from the UK and as a consequence hotel rooms are virtually sold out from now until next March.

However, thanks to a cancellation, Far East specialist Bamboo Travel is able to offer a chance to enjoy a 17-day trip departing on 9 January 2013, with accommodation at some of the finest hotels in the country.

One of the highlights of the trip is a rare chance to cruise aboard the RV Paukan for an overnight cruise on the Irrawaddy River from Mandalay to Bagan.

The Paukan is a boutique hotel on the river, which has timber-walled cabins furnished in a colonial style. It carries just 55 passengers who are looked after by a 30-member crew.

There are even two massage rooms on the lower deck offering traditional Myanmar massage.

The itinerary commences in the capital Yangon (formerly Rangoon) with two nights at the Savoy Hotel. The stay includes a private guided tour with a chance to see the famous golden Shwedagon Pagoda.

Next stop is Bago to visit the monastery of Thamanay, a renowned teaching centre for monks wish to study Buddhism, and the Golden Rock. The tour continues to the ancient Shwemawdaw Pagoda and on to Kin Pun 'base camp' and a visit to Kyaiktiyo – famous for its precarious position and religious importance.

After returning to Yangon the next stop, by air, is fabled Mandalay before taking a road trip to Pyin U Lwin.

Other places visited include Amarapura, Ava, Sagaing, Mount Popa, Sale, the Pindaya Caves and Inle Lake.

The one-off departure is on 9 January 2013 and costs from £4695 per person (two sharing). This includes international and domestic flights, all transportation, 14 nights’ luxury accommodation, most meals, the overnight cruise, private transfers/tours and an English-speaking guide.
