The adventure tour operator, Intrepid Travel has launched a new range of ‘food adventures’ which offer travellers authentic, affordable food experiences in countries renowned for their cuisine, including Vietnam, Mexico, Spain and India.

The twenty new trips celebrate street fare, local specialties, secret home recipes, markets and urban food culture, and are designed as an alternative to high-end, gourmet food tours. They will be led by a local tour leader who is passionate about the cuisine and has the inside scoop on the best local producers, restaurants and street stalls.

The new range of tours includes:

Real Food Adventures: 8–14 day tours which showcase the ‘real food’ culture and customs of multiple regions within a single country. Destinations include China, Vietnam, Mexico, India, Spain and Turkey, with prices starting from £820/€995 for the eight-day Mexico Real Food Adventure (excluding flights).

Bite-size Breaks: 3–5 day breaks which focus on a single region, making them ideal for a long weekend or short getaway. Destinations include Tokyo, New Orleans, the Veneto region in Italy, the Galicia region in northern Spain, and Bangkok/Chiang Mai. Prices start from £420/€505 for the five-day Thailand Bite-size Break (excluding flights).

Urban Food Safaris: 3–4 hour ‘food crawls’ which offer a unique insight into some of the best-known food cities and emerging hotspots, including Istanbul, Athens, Kuala Lumpur, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Delhi and Hanoi. Prices range from £20 - £45/€25 - €55.

Thomasina Miers, cookery writer and founder of the Mexican ‘market eating’ restaurant chain Wahaca has helped to design Intrepid’s Real Food Adventure in Mexico, which includes a late-night taco crawl in Mexico City, chance to sample regional specialities including grasshoppers at Oaxaca’s Asbastos Markets, and a cooking class in Puebla to learn the secrets of making authentic mole poblano.

Other well-known ‘foodies’ supporting the range of tours include Greg Malouf, recently head chef at the Michelin-starred Petersham Nurseries Café and Tracey Lister, an Australian chef and cookery writer with expertise in Vietnamese cuisine.

Intrepid’s Food Adventures have been designed for travellers who want to combine an interest in food with a destination’s key travel highlights, so trips also have time for exploration and visit major sites such as the Taj Mahal in India and Halong Bay in Vietnam. Trips depart from 30 March 2013 onwards.

Details of the full range of tours can be found at intrepidtravel.com/food.
