Asia specialist Bamboo Travel describes this as a peach of a new itinerary combining adventure, wildlife, culture and spectacular scenery. It also uses a recently launched flight which links north Sumatra with Central Java and includes the Argo Wilis train journey across central Java to the Dieng Plateau.

The adventure starts on Samosir Island in Sumatra, an island the size of Singapore set on Southeast Asia's largest lake (Toba), home to the fascinating Batak people and their intricately designed houses with distinctive boat shaped roofs.

Continue to the Gunung Leuser National Park and explore this pristine rainforest on elephant back, and to visit the Orangutan rehabilitation centre at Bukit Lawang where there is a good chance to see these wonderful apes in the wild.

A direct flight then connects you to the thriving city of Bandung in eastern Java, a good place to experience modern Indonesia and explore the surrounding countryside.

From here take the spectacular train journey across fertile plains flanked by towering volcanoes, towards the cultural heartland of central Java. Hop off near Wonosobo to explore the mysterious Hindu temple complex on the Dieng Plateau, before a 2 night stay overlooking the majestic Buddhist monument of Borobudur.

The trip finishes in the fascinating city of Yogyakarta, or it can be extended with a stay at one of Indonesia's many world class beaches.

The 16-day trip departs between March and November and costs from £2495 pp (two sharing).

Price includes international flights 13 nights’ B&B in hotels and a lodge (plus 2 lunches and 1 dinner) road transfers and tours on a private basis, private English speaking guides and drivers
