During summer months Clevedon’s historic marine lake becomes a popular site for families in North Somerset with a series of celebratory events taking place for the community to enjoy.

This year, back by popular demand is the Aquathlon, organised by not-for-profit group MARLENS.

The event will kick off a summer of activities on the lake and will raise money for vital repairs and conservation needed for the historic site.

Taking place on Sunday 30 June, the annual Aquathlon is a swim and run event for everyone to get involved in. There is a team option for those who don’t wish to do both challenges meaning keen athletes and anyone just looking for a fun challenge are welcome.

MARLENS chairman Joe Norman said: “The Aquathlon is always met by such enthusiasm by local people that we had to run it again this year! It’s the first major event of the summer on the lake so the atmosphere is always fantastic and it’s a great opportunity to celebrate the beautiful lake we have on our doorstep.

“We have a short race which consists of a 400m swim in the marine lake and a 3000m run on the promenade and a long race which is a 800m swim and a 6000m run. We also allow teams to enter so one person can run and one can swim. You can also come along to cheer on the competitors so there’s really something for everyone!”

This year the race will be followed by a have-a-go session on the marine lake with canoes, sailing dinghies and zorbs while Clevedon Brass will provide musical background. There will also be an opportunity for people to try their hand at navigating a radio-controlled model boat around a tricky course in the model boat pond.

Joe continued: “This is the sixth Aquathlon we have held at the lake and every year is bigger and better than the last. It’s great to see young people enjoying the surroundings and trying things they haven’t done before. It’s a real community event, let’s just keep our fingers crossed for good weather!”

Further into the season will be the famous Long Swim on Saturday 6 July. This is a one-mile race from Lady Bay to Clevedon Pier and always draws the crowds.

Following that the annual MARLENS Marine Lake Festival will be taking place on 13-15 September, with more details to be announced shortly.
