Elopements - A new eco-wedding trend

According to Ranch Rider a growing number of elopers are booking destination weddings just for two. While cost is one of the major reasons for downsizing the big day the tour operator claims there are other factors behind the trend.

Tony Daly, Managing Director of Ranch Rider, comments, “These days we’re all very aware of the effect we have on the environment, and removing the guest list makes marrying abroad a more eco-friendly way to tie the knot. While the majority of these weddings are planned it’s undoubtedly one of the most romantic ways to say, "I do" and couples don’t have the usual stress to contend with.”

Ranch Rider also suggests that social networking has played a part in the trend.

Tony Daly, comments, “The way we share important milestones in our lives has changed dramatically – updates, images and videos appearing in real time. First we had couples tweeting from the altar, but now they’re uploading their weddings from the range. With family and friends being tied to the experience by technology it’s a more acceptable option - even if Dad has to miss out on walking his daughter down the aisle.”

Oklahoma’s Island Guest Ranch is one of the first ranches to pick up on the new fashion for elopements, the owners now offering stays for two. Brides and their beaus will have the whole 5,000-acres to themselves, the ceremony followed by a private western honeymoon.

Exclusive to Ranch Rider, extras include, sparkling wine and strawberries dipped in chocolate on arrival, a moonlit/romantic buggy ride and breakfast out on the trail overlooking the sage brush hills. Romance out west, the trills of the native songbirds make this a one-of-a-kind wilderness retreat and couples can saddle up for some Sooner state adventure on daily wildlife rides.

Minimum 4-night stay with Ranch Rider from £935pp (two sharing) including, ensuite accommodation, meals, most ranch activities and taxes. Longer stays can be arranged. Transfers available from £75pp. Departures April through November. Add on 6-night starry-eyed self-drive from £450pp (two sharing) including, car hire and accommodation.
