Cheaper and easier than a £250k beef burger

As reported in the world’s press scientists have created the first beef burger to be ‘grown’ in a lab; but at a cost of nearly £250k it’s not likely to be on the menu in most households any time soon. But there are already easy, cheaper and tastier ways to swap high intensity animal based products for less intense, more environmentally friendly plant based products…

Agriculture is responsible for an estimated 14% of the world's greenhouse gases. A significant proportion of these emissions come from methane, which is 23 times more powerful than carbon dioxide, in respect to its contribution to global warming. Furthermore the U.S. Food and Agriculture Organization says that agricultural methane output could increase by 60 percent by 2030.

Scary stats, and, as the average person in the UK drinks over 241 kg of milk a year we certainly play a big part in adding to the problem - we consume 165 million cups of tea a day and we’re the world’s second highest consumers of breakfast cereal.

An easy way to help reduce your food’s greenhouse footprint is to make a soy milk swap. Soy production produces significantly less greenhouse emissions than dairy, with soy plants being CO2 sequesters rather than producers and also taking much less land and resource to produce than cattle. Furthermore, whilst in the past soy production involved clearing rainforest to create farmland, European brands such as Vivesoy now try and source as much soy as possible from Europe.

The taste and texture of soy milk has also improved dramatically over the last few years and Vivesoy’s unsweetened drink has been praised for its similarity to low fat dairy milk; they also produce flavoured drinks, such as cappuccino, vanilla and chocolate, which have been receiving rave reviews.

So if you genuinely want to reduce the impact that your food has to the planet, but aren’t ready to go vegan or wait for ‘grown in the lab’ burgers to be commercially available, then make the soy swap today.
