Are you savvy with cash or rubbish with money?

9th October 2013 Print

Two thirds (64%) of people see themselves as good with their day-to-day finances, according to new research from budgeting account provider thinkmoney.

While the majority of men and women would describe themselves as ‘penny planners' - meaning they keep on top of their expenditure and make every penny count - 16% say they are rubbish with money and often go overdrawn by mistake. These people admit they are chaotic about managing their finances and never really know where they stand financially.

However, 14% of respondents to our survey thought of themselves as a ‘financial whizz'. They said they know exactly what they are doing with their money, so much so that they have a financial plan in place - and stick to it.

A further 6% conceded they had their ‘head in the clouds' when it came to their finances. They believe that life's too short to worry about money when there are more interesting things to be getting on with.

While the sexes are pretty evenly split when it comes to how they see their finances, older Brits believe they're better at keeping a handle on their cash. For example, 70% of the over-65s considered themselves ‘penny planners', compared with 53% of 18-to-24 year-olds. And just 5% of pensioners described themselves as rubbish with money (22% of the adults under 35 said the same).

Northern Ireland residents were the most likely to think they're rubbish with money - 35% said so, compared with 11% in the East of England.

Ian Williams, director of communications thinkmoney, said: "Keeping track of your finances isn't always easy. We all lead busy lives and it can be hard to budget successfully. Sometimes, people need a little extra help to keep on top of their outgoings. For those that describe themselves as "rubbish with money" the thinkmoney Personal Account could help put them back in control."
