Luxurious mountain lodge L’Ancienne Poste in the village of Avajan in the French Pyrenees – owned and run by Englishman James Dealtry – is launching week-long Art Retreats, the first of which is on 5 October.

The courses will be run by art teacher Lieke den Dekker from Tilberg in Holland, who took a degree in Fine Arts in 2006, graduated as a teacher in 2010 and went on to take an MA in Arts and Education in 2013.

Comments Lieke: “I have been drawing and painting since I was able to hold a pencil and the magic really began to happen for me when I started studying Fine Arts in 2006. After four years filled with colours, photographs, museums, long nights in my studio, endless dialogs with teachers, students and classmates, and a lot of brushes, paper, clay, wax and pencils, I graduated as an art teacher in 2010.

“For me the most important thing in art is telling a story that everybody understands, but cannot be told by words. The connection art can make between people is magical, and this is something I absolutely love to work with.

“The Art Retreat at l'Ancienne Poste Avajan is open to all levels and I will make sure everybody can set and achieve their personal goals, no matter how big or small.”

The dates for the week-long retreats are 5, 11 and 18 October and cost from €999 pp (two sharing a room). The price for non-painting partners is €749 for the week.

The price includes daily classes (with materials) and seven nights’ B&B plus six dinners with beer and wine.

Flights are not included but the area is well served by three main airports Pau, Lourdes-Tarbes, and Toulouse and can be accessed using low cost airlines such as Easyjet or Ryanair along with other mainstream airlines such as British Airways

Transfers can be arranged with the lodge on request.
