Following the European triumph in the Ryder Cup, why not think about a golfing break to Wales which is home to almost 200 golf courses – one of which, Celtic Manor, famously hosted the competition a few years ago; there are challenging seaside links, scenic parkland courses, and steep, hilly golf courses, located in the foothills of Snowdonia.

Many are close to members of the Welsh Rarebits collection of hotels and here are just a few to get you reaching for your driver!

Gwesty'r Emlyn, a traditional coaching inn converted into a modern, 26-room hotel in the market town of Newcastle Emlyn in west Wales, is a short drive from a number of courses including the famous Cardigan Golf Club.

The 6500 yard course is situated high above the shores of Cardigan Bay on the Teifi Estuary, and is a mixture of links and parkland with scattered clumps of gorse and heather which, when combined with breezy conditions, provide a challenge for golfers of all abilities. Weekday green fees are £30. Double rooms at Gwesty’r Emlyn from £120 (B&B, two sharing).

Trefloyne Manor, an old manor house with a modern interior design has 12 guest rooms and what’s more, has an 18-hole, 6800 yard, par 72 golf course within its grounds! Residents can play 18 holes midweek for just £10 or £15 at weekends. Double rooms from £90 (B&B, two sharing).

The Metropole Hotel & Spa is a grand old building full of Victorian pomp but with every creature comfort you could wish for including a spa with bookable treatments – perfect for a massage after 18 holes of golf. The course at the local Llandrindod Wells Golf Club was designed in 1905 by the legendary Harry Vardon, the man who also invented the grip used by the majority of the world’s golfers today.

Best described as an ‘Inland Links’ course, it is a true test for golfers of all abilities with midweek green fees £30. Double rooms at the Metropole Hotel from £126 (B&B, two sharing a room).
