Bin the bacteria, it’s time for tea

A recent study carried out at University College London suggests that many probiotic drinks may be a waste of time, and money, as only a small amount of the beneficial bacteria they contain actually reach the area of the gut where they’re most useful.

The study looked at eight different pro-biotic drinks and discovered that, when scientists tested them, only one pasted all their tests and resulted in sufficient bacteria flourishing in the small intestine. Bad news for the 14 million people in the UK thought to suffer with IBS.

It’s not time to give up hope just yet however as there is another kind of drink, recently launched in Holland and Barrett stores, which research indicates may be hugely beneficial for IBS sufferers.

A study, carried out at the University of Reading, showed that an amazing 96% of patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) rated artichoke leaf extract as better than or equal to previous therapies administered for their IBS symptoms. It was seen that, over a six week study period, those taking artichoke leaf extract revealed significant reductions in the severity of symptoms and favourable evaluations of overall effectiveness were reported by both physicians and patients.

Organic Artichoke Tea

An easy and effective way to enjoy artichoke is with Natur Boutique’s Organic Artichoke Tea, which is now available from Holland and Barrett stores nationwide and costs just £2.99 per box. It is used just like any other herbal tea; simply add hot water and enjoy not only its taste, but also its potential benefits.

Please note: Pregnant and breast feeding women should seek advice from their doctors before using artichoke extracts. Artichoke leaf extract should not be taken in the presence of gallstones or other bile duct occlusion, due to its bile stimulating effects.
