A group of Clevedon friends have once again organised a sponsored run in aid of the charity which cared for a beloved friend and brother and are urging people to put on their running shoes and take part in the event.

Barney Feely, 37, has organised the Clevedon Half Marathon and 10K run along with a group of friends for the past eight years, raising over £20,000 in his brother Damien Feely’s name.

After setting up the Damien Feely Foundation earlier this year to raise money for local cancer charities, the group has announced that the annual Clevedon run event will take place this year on Saturday 13 December with all proceeds going to St Peter’s Hospice.

Barney hopes the event will raise around £5,000 for the charity which cared for Damien in 2007 when he lost his battle with cancer aged just 32.

He said: “The Clevedon Half Marathon and 10K is back again this year! The event has grown year on year and we’re really excited that it is expanding and that both runners and cyclists are getting involved. We are urging those interested to visit the hospice website to find out more and sign up – it’s the perfect goal to work towards for winter training.

“The race begins and ends at the Crab Apple Inn in Clevedon and this year we have planned a host of celebrations after the event. We are creating a wonderful Santa’s Grotto for the children and in the evening there will be a fancy dress disco with karaoke to end the day!

“My family’s experience with St Peter’s Hospice was fantastic and the staff treated my brother with kind consideration and respect which is why we set up this event in the first place.

“We have since launched the Damien Feely Foundation to raise money for other local cancer charities and earlier this year we held our first summer event, raising £1,550 for Children’s Hospice South West.

“Our Half Marathon and 10k is always full of atmosphere and is a great excuse for a fun day out while raising money for a really worthwhile cause.”

The Clevedon 10k & Half Marathon routes offer great potential for fast times. The scenic, sea-level routes take runners and cyclists along the lanes of Kingston Seymour and through the picturesque village. This follows a circular route neatly bringing participants back to the Crab Apple Inn.

Jo Plummer, community fundraiser at St Peter’s Hospice said: “It’s great that Barney is supporting us once again this year with his wonderful event in Clevedon. All the organisers are so passionate and they put in so much effort, I really hope they get lots of support and people sign up for the day. Taking part in the run means not only will you be supporting a great cause, it also means you won’t feel so guilty eating the mince pies at Christmas! All the best to the runners on the day.”

As Bristol’s only adult hospice, St Peter’s Hospice cares for more than 2,670 patients each year as well as supporting family members.

All services are provided free of charge but this care costs around £18,630 a day. For around £14,000 of that, the hospice relies on gifts in wills, kind donations and funds generated by the hospice shops.
