Brits spend nearly a week's salary to attend weddings

6th July 2016 Print

With wedding season upon us and people gearing up to attend their nearest and dearest's big day, new research from American Express reveals guests are set to spend £479 per wedding this year. This is just £24 less than the UK average weekly salary.

When it comes to the costs associated with attending the big day, guests are set to spend over £100 on gifts alone, which is closely followed by travel (£94), hotel accommodation (£74) and drinks at the venue (£48).

2016 spending for the big day:

Items - 2016 spend

Gifts £102

Travel £94

Outfit £75

Hotel/accommodation £74

Hen/Stag dos £58

Drinks £48

Hair & beauty £28

Total £479

In a bid to manage budgets ahead of their friends, families and loved-ones nuptials, over half (52%) will look to shop in the sales to save on their outfit, while 59% will look to mix and match their outfit from clothes they've worn at previous celebrations to avoid buying something new. A further 46% will use a rewards or loyalty card in an effort to get something back for their pre-wedding purchases.

Jenny Cheung, Director at American Express said: "While a wedding was once considered extremely costly for the bride's father, our study shows that guests face a significant bill. With this in mind, it's never been more important to get your finances in order so you can have fun when it comes to the big day. A great way to make the most out of your wedding spending is to use a credit card that offers rewards or cashback. That way you'll get a little something extra back after the celebrations are over."
