The power of eye contact on a first date

Little do you know it but eye contact is one of your most potent weapons of mass seduction. It’s one of the simplest ways to articulate to your date that you’re interested in them, without even having to open your mouth!

Eye contact: scientifically proven

Many people undervalue a locked stare or held gaze when in fact eye contact is often more powerful than a chat-up line or ‘big I am’ story. 20 years ago, an American psychologist Art Aron conducted a test at his New York State University lab, designed to better understand the power of eye-gazing without saying a word. The results of the test were somewhat remarkable. Most of the men and women involved in the study admitted feeling extremely attracted to their test partner and one couple even married just 12 months later!

It can go deeper than ‘just’ eye contact too; pupil dilation is another scientifically-proven, sure-fire sign that an individual finds something – or someone – attractive. According to Scientific American, men subconsciously find women with larger pupils more attractive and this theory dates back many centuries. More than 500 years ago, Italian women would extract from the Belladonna plants in order to dilate their pupils and improve their appeal to men.

Glasses Vs Contacts: The big dilemma

Glasses

If you tend to wear glasses most days and don’t rely on daily or monthly contact lenses, this begs the question as to whether you should wear glasses or contact lenses for first dates. Deciding what to wear is one of the most excruciating aspects of preparing for a date with a special someone – and that’s before you’ve even considered how your eyes will be perceived! It all depends on whether contacts give you a greater sense of self-confidence and if you find them easy to use.

Historically, some types of contacts have caused eyes to dry out or become cloudy, causing significant discomfort in the process. However, you can see that the latest contact lenses such as the new range of everclear lenses are made of a silicone hydrogel material that allows oxygen to pass through, ensuring comfortable, healthy-looking eyes for that exciting date – buying lenses online is no longer the minefield that it once was.

Alternatively, if you’ve worn glasses for much of your life, it’s almost certain that they have become a part of you and your personality. As a result, if you want your date to see the real you, it’s probably best to keep the specs on and embrace your look. In fact, wearing glasses is no longer considered geeky. They’re viewed just as much as a fashion accessory as something that helps to enhance your vision. Nevertheless, your glasses can still be worn to accentuate your intelligence, especially if you want your date to recognise you for your brains first – and hopefully your beauty second!

When it comes to finding your soulmate for life, it’s not only a case of securing a first date; the real battle is to bag the next one. However, by using your eyes and your body language just as much as your mouth, you’ll be able to discover those tell-tale signs whether they’re into you. Good luck!
