Terex Demag uses Cummins QSC in all-terrain military crane Cummins announced that they have signed an agreement with Terex Demag to provide QSC engines to power the MAC-50 all-terrain crane. This will be supplied to the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) through Terex Government Programs.

The Cummins QSC engine, built in Darlington, UK, is rated at 228kW (305hp) to provide superior engine performance even in the most demanding duty cycles of the MAC-50 all-terrain crane.

Hendrik Dobberthien, Cummins Industrial Account Leader, commented, “The U.S. Marine Corps set tough requirements right from the start regarding their vehicle’s specification and the engine with which it is equipped. Cummins QSC’s outstanding reputation for performance and durability coupled with its high power to weight ratio gives the vehicle excellent versatility for fast response and lifting capability in a tough military environment.”

The U.S. Marine Corps have extremely tough military specifications, including suitability for rapid deployment and all-terrain capability. The engine needs to be compatible with a wide range of military fuels including 100% kerosene. Additionally, the engine needs to have a cold-starting capability down to -32oC and also to operate in hot climates with temperatures up to + 50oC.

The Terex MAC-50 crane has a salt-water fording capability up to 1.5m (60 inches) and a 45-tonne lifting capacity. Terex manufactures its MAC-50 cranes at its Terex Demag plant in Zweibruecken, Germany. The MAC-50 has specifically been developed in order to meet a combination of performance and legislation compliance required by the US Marine Corps.

The Cummins QSC successfully meets all these stringent USMC requirements, and goes further. Cummins Tier 3/Stage IIIA emissions solution with the latest clean combustion technology reduces both thermal and visible smoke signature to very low levels out in the field. Equipped with a high-pressure common-rail fuel system, it allows multiple injection events for cleaner, quieter operation. With a combination of electronic controls and a durable block design, the QSC is a good match for the all-terrain crane MAC-50.
