Surge in motorcycle accidents during hot weather

Classic motorcycle accident claims in June’s hot weather more than doubled compared with last year, according to Footman James.

Paul Matthews, managing director of the specialist insurance broker explained: “June’s hot and sunny weather made for ideal conditions for motorcyclists to head out onto the roads, especially ‘weekend’ riders, who may be less experienced than those who use their motorcycles for the daily commute.

“With motorists not used to this sudden influx of motorcyclists, the chance of accidents occurring was unfortunately higher than usual.

“A number of weather-related factors during June also helped raise the risk of motorcycle accidents, such as the glare of the sun, melted tarmac, which can reduce tyre grip and summer rainstorms, which can make roads greasy and slippery - a real hazard to motorcyclists.”

He added: “The best thing about owning a classic motorcycle is taking it out on the open road, and the chances of an accident are still very slim - all I would advise is that motorcyclists be extra careful in the hot weather.”

Tips for safe motorcycle riding

Complete an advanced rider course
Ensure high visibility and protective clothing is worn
Keep headlamps on even in full sunshine
Anticipate that other drivers may not see you and be prepared for their actions
Make yourself as visible as possible to motorists
Use caution when overtaking queues of traffic, which may build up during the summer
Be aware of oncoming vehicles which may turn across your path
Do not overtake near side roads or where cars may emerge from private drives
