Holiday makers may miss out on cheaper mobile calls this summer

23rd May 2007 Print
Commenting on today’s announcement from the European Parliament’s vote today to reduce the charges for using mobile phones in European countries, the National Consumer Council (NCC) warns that mobile phone companies must act quickly to ensure that people going on their summer holidays benefit from these new tariffs.

Carl Belgrove, an Economist at the National Consumer Council (NCC) says: ‘This is great news for consumers. For too long mobile phone operators have been overcharging holiday makers and travellers. The introduction of a cap on tariffs means that people will be making substantial savings when making calls to friends and family in the UK. It will also reduce the amount we pay for receiving calls by up to 75 per cent.

‘But there is a danger that people jetting off on their holidays this summer could miss the boat completely. If companies do not act quickly, it could take months for people to reap the benefits of these lower prices. We are urging consumers to contact their service providers to check what tariff they are on before they go on holiday.’
