Operators switch customers to new EU capped roaming tariff

27th September 2007 Print
Commenting on mobile phone operators switching customers to the new EU capped roaming tariff on Sunday 30 September, Rob Barnes, head of mobiles at moneysupermarket.com said: “On Sunday, any operators that have not done so already, will be obliged to switch their customers to the new roaming charges that were introduced at the end of June.

“Although the automatic switchover comes long after most holiday makers have returned home this summer, it does mean a potential saving of over £9 million for people jetting off in search of winter sun.

“It is no surprise that all of the networks, apart from 3, have set the new rates at the ceiling of the cap. In doing this 3 is offering customers real value, hopefully others will follow 3’s example and reduce their tariffs over time.

“For frequent travellers, there are other ways to save money when making calls abroad. Global SIM cards are a good idea as they allow you to visit different countries using just the one card. Alternatively, mobile users may want to consider VoIP which lets people make calls via a laptop for only a few pence or for free if calling another VoIP line.”
