Holidaymakers set to be stung by mobile roaming charges

14th July 2008 Print
UK holidaymakers jetting off this summer, could be in for a ‘pocket shock' when they return home to their mobile phone bill.

For those travelling in the EU, the cap on voice calls has been lowered again this year, but the cost of sending texts and downloading data can be as much as 49p per text and £8 per MB downloaded, leaving holidaymakers in danger of being stung by high roaming charges this summer.

Those travelling worldwide should consider signing up to their provider's international discount tariff for access to cheaper rates, such as Vodafone's Passport/International Call Saver or O2's International Traveller Service.

Using a global SIM card can also be a cost effective option, allowing you to roam almost anywhere in the world with a single SIM, ideal for those travelling to several countries.

Rob Barnes, head of broadband and mobiles at moneysupermarket.com, said: "Firstly, you should check with your operator before you head off on your holiday as to how much calls will cost, and if you can change to an international tariff while you're away.

"For frequent travellers, local and global SIM cards are a great alternative, especially if you go away quite often. If you regularly travel to one destination, it's worthwhile considering a local sim card. Global cards are ideal for those who travel a lot and to different places around the world; these cards can help save a lot of money when calling from abroad.

"Calling or texting home from abroad can be expensive at the best of times, but think twice before downloading that episode of The Apprentice. Roaming charges can mean an unwelcome mobile bill on your return if you don't think carefully before using your phone abroad."
