Royal Mail kicks off new beginning for Wembley Stadium
One of the world’s most famous sporting venues is back - and Royal Mail is to celebrate the new Wembley Stadium with a special miniature sheet of five stamps.Millions of the commemorative stamp sheets are available from the 17 May, giving football fans a 1st Class memento of the first FA Cup Final taking place in the new stadium two days later.
The five stamps are suitably patriotic - a 1st Class stamp featuring the Crowned Lion of England, two 2nd Class Three Lions of England stamps and two 78p Rose of England stamps. They are set against a background photograph of the magnificent Wembley Arch.
Julietta Edgar, Head of Special Stamps, Royal Mail said: “Wembley has a special place in people’s hearts and I think it’s important to mark this latest chapter in its long history. This miniature sheet will be a great way for football fans in particular to celebrate the rebirth of this iconic sporting venue.”
Double FA Cup Winner Sir Trevor Brooking said: “Wembley is well worth the wait and the arch will become one of the sights of London. I shall get my set of Royal Mail stamps so that my little grandson will hopefully be one of the first recipients.”
Wembley Stadium’s Managing Director Alex Horne said: “It is a real honour that Royal Mail has decided to mark the opening of the new national stadium in such a special way. Wembley is a fantastic example of modern day design and it is fitting that its official opening should be celebrated by releasing this special collection of commemorative Royal Mail stamps.”
