There’s still time to make the most of dollar bargains online
Shoppers wishing to make the most of the strong pound but not able to make the journey to America should look to the internet for some great dollar bargains suggests currency broker HiFX. In contrast the pound is now almost 7% weaker against the Euro than it was this time last year, making Europe a less appealing destination for a seasonal spree. Despite a speedier Eurostar making shopping in Paris or Brussels particularly accessible, the best bargains this Christmas based on the strength of sterling are to be found in America. The Pound is currently trading against the US Dollar at 2.0400, over 4% higher than its value this time last year. However, to make the most of these bargains, shoppers no longer need to face long haul flights and hotel bills.
Mark Bodega, Director at currency experts HiFX explains: “For the thousands of Brits heading to Europe’s Christmas Markets, saving money shouldn’t be top of their wish list, as the weakening Pound could mean both their trip and any gifts bought could become more expensive. A better way to make the most of the strong pound this Christmas is to shop online using some of the many American websites where the goods are priced in Dollars.”
As a result of the weakening Dollar, many goods on US websites cost two thirds of their price in the UK. For example make-up lovers can purchase ‘benetint’ (a lip and cheek stain product) from US cosmetic brand Benefit for $28 (£14) via the company’s American website as opposed to paying 50% more for the same product in UK shops (£22.50). Even factoring in shipping costs ($7.95 or £3.98) shoppers can still make a saving. Other bargains can be found on outdoor clothing suppliers www.rei.com. A woman’s The North Face Nuptse Down Vest costs $125 (£62.50) on the American website compared to £99 for the same product from UK store Blacks. International shipping from www.rei.com is $60 (£30) so shoppers would have to purchase more than one item to make the most of the savings.
However HiFX is also reminding shoppers to remember to factor in VAT, import duty and possible post office handling charges as well as international shipping costs when calculating savings. And some bargains will still remain out of reach for anyone not travelling to America as many big name US brands such as Apple and Abercrombie and Fitch do not ship outside the United States.
Bodega continues, “Now is a great time to make the most of online bargains but shoppers had better be quick to guarantee delivery in time for Christmas.”
People wishing to make large purchases such as buying a property in America should also consider the best way to make the most of the exchange rate. HiFX typically charges 4% less than high street banks on large currency transfers.
