Sex and the City girls move to the UK
Sex and the City may have come from the shores of the US, but many women across the UK are living the Sex and the City lifestyle of those portrayed by its four characters, according to a new report. The Sex and the City Generation: Fashionistas not Cashonistas report, unveils the locations where our very own Carries, Charlottes, Mirandas and Samanthas are likely to live in the UK.According to the research from Friends Provident it isn't just the film's premiere which made the trip from state side to the UK. It found that London is the new New York for Carrie; Samanthas are most likely to live in Wales; many Scots are Miranda through and through and the South East is the home of Charlottes.
The report looked at behaviours of the Sex and the City foursome, and matched them to responses of women aged 25 to 45 throughout the UK. It found:
If Carrie were to live in the UK, London would be her city. According to the report "Carrie has a huge number of shoes but no home of her own. She rarely, if ever, thinks about her finances, and sometimes sacrifices lunch so she can afford shoes." The report found that a third (32%) of women in London own 30 pairs of shoes or more, but less than half (46%) own their own home. It also reports that 29% of London women have sacrificed bought lunches or coffee, 32% have cut back on socialising and 11% have sacrificed a holiday all in order in order to save up for a pair of shoes.
According to The Sex and the City Generation: Fashionistas not Cashonistas report, women in Wales most resemble Samantha. It revealed: "Samantha is renowned for her great interest in men. She is also worried about ageing and has beauty treatments to combat it, to ensure that she can still attract men." The research found that almost a third (31%) of the Welsh women questioned worry about ageing with more than a third (35%) using anti-ageing cosmetics and a quarter (25%) exercising to look younger. And more than one in 10 (12%) do so either to attract a new partner or to keep their current one interested.
The report found that Charlottes are most likely to live in the South East: "Like Charlotte, many of our respondents are looking to marry a rich man and settle down." It found that 20% of women in the South East said that when in a relationship their partner pays for more than they do and in the South East, the highest level of respondents said they would love to meet a rich man so they don't have to worry any more.
Miranda in turn is most likely to be Scottish according to the report. It found that Scottish women were most likely to earn more than their partner (24%). Mirandas are also the more financially savvy of the SATC generation, as more than a third (34%) of the Scottish women questioned had life or health insurance and one in three (32%) said they had a personal pension - both above the national average.
Christine O'Grady, senior retail media relations executive at Friends Provident, said: "The UK is full of women living the Sex and the City lifestyle, yet many of them are doing so by gambling with the future. Scottish Mirandas tell us they are best prepared financially but we would urge the Carries of this world to consider where the shoes of today will get them in the future."
