17th October 2008 Print
B&Q is introducing a One Planet Home Starter Kit which can have an immediate impact on household bills. For an initial outlay of £333 on B&Q’s new One Planet Home range, you could save up to £1000 a year on household expenses.

B&Q’s new One Planet Home range includes nearly 2,000 affordable products that can help people live more affordably and sustainably at home. From Grow Your Own organic plants to solar panels, B&Q now offers the largest range of eco products under one roof.

Euan Sutherland, B&Q’s Chief Executive says: “B&Q is bringing all its sustainable products together under one label to make products easily identifiable to customers. The One Planet Home range offers our customers value for money - and can make instant savings on household expenses as well as reducing our impact on the planet.”

B&Q’s One Planet Home Green Kit includes five basic components that save you money on heating, energy, water and food bills: loft insulation to equivalent 270mm, energy saving light bulbs for the entire house, a water butt, washing line instead of tumble drying and vegetable seeds that go towards your ‘5 a day’.

B&Q’s One Planet Home range has been developed in partnership with sustainability experts BioRegional, and is designed to help people understand which products and good habits are healthier for themselves and for the planet. Products are simply labelled into six categories to make it easy for consumers to identify their impact: Save Energy (e.g. insulation), Save Water (e.g. water butts), Recycle (e.g. composters), Grow your Own (e.g. seeds), Healthy Homes (e.g. minimal VOC paint), Conserve Nature (e.g. FSC timber).

Sue Riddlestone, Director of BioRegional says: “If everyone in the world consumes resources like the average Brit, then to maintain our current way of life will take three planets and we have only one. We have checked B&Q’s One Planet Home products against our 10 principles of sustainability. If a keen customer bought products across all the categories they could reduce their total Ecological Footprint by 10% - which is a significant reduction.”

* The OPH Starter Kit includes five basic components that could save an average three bedroom terraced house with garden up to £1050.50 on energy bills, water bills and food bills.

**How the savings have been calculated:

Loft insulation: the annual energy saving from insulating an average loft to the equivalent of 270mm (EST)

Light bulbs: the annual energy saving from replacing all conventional light bulbs to Energy Saving light bulbs (EST)

Vegetables: an example of the cost of growing your own vegetables compared to purchasing equivalent standard ‘5 a day’ vegetables at £2.03 per day from a high street supermarket over the course of a year. Cost doesn’t include gardening equipment. Harvest season varies from May-November, and surplus can be frozen or preserved. For fresh vegetables all year round, supplement with B&Q Cabbage 98p, B&Q Cauliflower All Year Round 98p, B&Q Onion Ailsa Craig 98p, B&Q Parsnip Tender & Pure 98p, B&Q Cress Curled 98p (B&Q)

Water butt: A standard water butt contains 70p of metered water and can be filled up to 75 times from average rainfall (Yorkshire Water/ Royal Horticultural Society)

Washing line: the annual saving of not using a drier (EST)
