2009 Sheffield Half Marathon already a record breaker
The turn of the New Year saw entries for the 2009 Sheffield Half Marathon reach the milestone figure, and numbers are up by over 300 entries from the same point last year. The race, renowned for attracting runners from all ages, backgrounds and abilities, again promises to be one of the biggest participation events in Sheffield’s sporting calendar and this year looks on course to reach its entry limit of 5,500.
Ian Thomas, entries co-ordinator for the Half Marathon, said: “It is great to see that, even in times of economic difficulty, people are keener than ever to take part in the race.
“However, we would still urge people to sign up to raise cash for some great charities and make this our most successful race to date.”
One of the entries is Nicola Clay from Leicestershire club Stilton Striders, last year’s winner of the ladies race, who has accepted an invitation to return to the race to reclaim her title.
The SIG Insulations Sheffield Half Marathon and 3k Fun Run will take place on 26 April 2009 at Sheffield International Venues managed facility Don Valley Stadium from 9:30am.
The 10 chosen charities for this year’s event are Sheffield Teenage Cancer Trust, Motor Neurone Disease Association South Yorkshire, Macmillan Cancer Support, Myasthenia Gravis Association, RSPCA Sheffield, Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre South Yorkshire, Sheffield Wildlife Trust, Marie Curie Cancer Care, Sheffield Royal Society for the Blind and Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice.
