Cranberry Health Benefits Have Staying Power

Cranberry Health Benefits Have Staying Power A new study published in a recent issue of Phytomedicine: International Journal of Phytotherapy and Phytopharmacology has examined the ability of cranberry extract to ward off Urinary Tract Infections (UTI) in women with a history of recurrent infections.

During the course of the study, none of the women experienced a UTI. The promise of cranberries long lasting health benefits were strengthened when two years after the initial study, eight of the women who continue to take cranberry, continued to be free of UTIs, a finding that researchers find exciting given the rise of antibiotic resistance.

Cranberries contain a unique combination of antioxidants and natural compounds called Proanthocyanidins (PACs), which studies show inhibit the adherence of certain E Coli bacteria that cause UTIs. Cranberry juice is a well known preventative of cystitis.
“The results of this pilot study reinforces the idea that by including cranberry in their diet, women can benefit tremendously by reducing the risk of urinary tract infections,” said Dr. Amy Howell, research scientist at Rutgers University.

The role that cranberry can play in general health protection seems to be growing, as a number of studies have shown this anti-stick mechanism may work beyond the bladder – including in the stomach and mouth. It’s exciting to consider that these effects could help prevent infection over time.

The growers’ co-operative of Ocean Spray produces a range of cranberry juice drinks which offer a refreshing route to inner health protection in every glass.
