Believed to date from the reign of the Emperor Hadrian, The Pantheon in Rome was originally built as a temple to the Roman gods and since the 7th century has been used as a church. The diameter of its dome measures 142 feet and is the largest unreinforced dome in the world. What a lot of people do not realise is it is constructed of Roman Concrete.

The art of concrete making was lost after the fall of the Roman Empire and the first recorded rediscovery in England, was by John Smeaton in 1756. It was not until 1886 that the first rotary kiln producing a constant supply of cement was introduced to England.

By 1928, concrete had been tried, tested and used but it still held a fascination for most people including the owner of Lantern House in Chesham. Concrete held such a fascination for him that he utilised part of his house to construct concrete items for his garden. These items include paving, garden features and an Etruscan style folly, all of which exist today. Adding to its idyllic charm, a branch of the River Chess also runs through the end of the garden.
