New homes in Malmesbury are ‘on the radar’

17th August 2007 Print
New homes on the site of a former World War II radar factory in Malmesbury, Wiltshire, will go on sale during September and would-be home owners are invited to book their place at the launch. Redrow’s Cowbridge Mill venture, off Swindon Road, Malmesbury will comprise 143 new homes and home working units.

The land was originally occupied by Cowbridge House and a mill building, which dates back to the 1700s and is to be converted into a restaurant as part of a larger redevelopment package.

The site was formerly owned by Lucent Technologies and used for manufacturing until 1996 – including as a second world war radar factory.

Award winning developer Redrow has planning permission for 112 private dwellings, including some home working units, plus 27 key worker apartments and four socially rented apartments. The choice for home buyers will include apartments, semi-detached and detached houses, terraced homes and three-storey town houses, offering everything from one to five bedrooms.

Sue Pittaway, area sales manager for Redrow Homes (South West), says: “This is a beautiful location and home owners will enjoy the benefits of a countryside setting, overlooking the river, mill race and water meadows.

“A protected mature tree belt within the site will be retained, creating an attractive backdrop, and proposed refurbishment of the mill building into a restaurant will be an added attraction for our customers.

“There’s also an easy commute to the M4 for access to Swindon and Bristol, whilst Malmesbury is about halfway between the historic city of Bath and the capital of the Cotswolds, Cirencester.”

Malmesbury itself is an ancient market town with a wealth of 17th and 18th century buildings, many of which now accommodate a host of welcoming pubs and shops, and is famous for its seventh century abbey and gardens. The town has all of the local amenities people would expect, including a choice of good schools.

The site’s vendor, Minton Group, has retained land to provide an office courtyard scheme and will undertake the mill-to-restaurant conversion.

As part of its development, Redrow will be contributing to an enhanced local bus service, a cycle route between Cowbridge Mill and the centre of Malmesbury, off-site skate park and/or a youth centre, plus the refurbishment of Malmesbury town hall.

Cowbridge Mill will be launched from the Old Bell Hotel on Thursday, September 20th, from 4pm, and would-be purchasers are urged to register their interest as soon as possible to secure their invitation. There will be a scale model of the development for people to view, together with plans, computer generated images of the homes and details of the internal specification.
