Works commence on Stanground bypass Works have commenced on the new bypass in Stanground in Peterborough. A sod-cutting ceremony took place on 13 March with developer Persimmon Homes and Mayor of Peterborough, Councillor Marion Todd in attendance.

The new bypass will significantly reduce traffic levels in the centre of Stanground. The works on the bypass mark the beginning of the creation of a new community for Stanground with Persimmon Homes due to commence construction of 1,525 homes in the area this summer.

Persimmon Homes East Midlands’ largest ever land acquisition which spans 120 acres, currently has outline planning consent and will accommodate the ever expanding local community within the Peterborough area.

Adrian Evans, managing director for Persimmon Homes East Midlands comments: “I am delighted that works have now started on this new scheme for Stanground. The inception of this new community and bypass has taken years of careful planning and we are thrilled to have taken this first step in the creation of what will become a thriving new community with excellent transport links, including this vital new bypass. We are creating a contemporary and sustainable new neighbourhood and one which we’re confident will positively benefit the wider community for generations to come.”

Mayor of Peterborough, Councillor Marion Todd added: “The construction of this new residential development is an important element in Peterborough ambitious growth agenda.

“It is important that adequate infrastructure is provided at an early stage of the city’s growth so I am pleased that this new bypass will be built before the new homes are occupied.”

The residential development in Stanground will consist of a mix of one and two bedroom apartments, through to four and five bedroom homes. A provision of 30 per cent of the properties being built will be allocated to affordable housing.

As well as providing a new bypass, Persimmon Homes will also be creating playing fields and a community centre which will incorporate a number of shops, office space, surgery, public house and several homes for the elderly.

The company will also be funding the construction of a new local primary school and health centre, and will be contributing to Peterborough’s Green Wheel, by including cycle paths within the development, Persimmon hopes to encourage residents to use bicycles in an attempt to reduce the number of motorised journeys. In addition the company will be providing a contribution for secondary education and various community initiatives.

Persimmon Homes is interested in purchasing land occupying two acres or more which is within an easy drive of a local town and amenities.
