Berkeley helps The Children’s House celebrate Nest Box Week

The aim of National Nest Box Week is to encourage everyone to put up nest boxes to help British breeding birds and other wildlife. The natural nest sites on which many bird species depend, such as holes in trees and buildings, are disappearing as gardens and woods are tidied and old properties restored and repaired. Since National Nest Box Week was launched 10 years ago, however, thousands of people have put up nest boxes, helping the conservation effort in the UK.
Berkeley Homes, currently building at Knowle Village near Wickham, will erect two styles of nest boxes at the development: one, in olive green, to hang on a tree and the other, in autumn red, to nestle in a hedge. In addition to help choose where to place the nest boxes, the children, aged between eighteen months and five years, spent an entire day working on the theme of ‘birds.’ Morning lessons focused on the types of bird that can be spotted in an English garden, how birds make their nests and the type of foods they eat. The afternoon was spent making bird food with a delightfully messy mixture of lard and seed which, once set, was placed around the green spaces of the development.
“The children thoroughly enjoyed the learning experience and are looking forward to spotting birds in and around the nest boxes as these new wildlife environments become more established,” comments Annie Marodeen, Director of The Children’s House. “We are extremely grateful to Berkeley Homes for providing us with this interesting opportunity to help the children learn about wildlife and also to make contribute to nature conservation.”
