Obesity patients make every pound count for new charity initiative

23rd November 2009 Print

The National Obesity Surgery Centre, the UK’s leading specialist in weight-loss surgery, has announced a joint initiative with Habitat for Humanity, a charity which provides housing for vulnerable people living in poverty across the world.

The partnership aims to raise vital funds to support Habitat for Humanity’s Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) project in Mozambique, South East Africa, where a staggering 8% of the population are orphans due to the devastating impact of HIV and AIDS.

The National Obesity Surgery Centre has established an initiative whereby patients raise money for the OVC project as they strive to reach their target weight loss. Patients are getting involved in a number of ways; donating a pound for each pound in weight that they lose, asking friends and family to sponsor their weight loss goals and taking part in organised charity events.

Carol Crabtree, founder and director of the National Obesity Surgery Centre commented, “Many of our patients are seeing dramatic weight loss and achieving fantastic results through our procedures and excellent support programme. By teaming up with Habitat for Humanity, we can ensure that they are not only transforming their own lives, but potentially those of many others.

“It’s also a great incentive to help patients achieve their goals and with their friends, family and ourselves pledging support, we hope that patients will be able to celebrate their weight loss in a really positive way.”

Emma Ives, sector marketing manager at Habitat for Humanity added, “We at Habitat for Humanity are passionate about our work in Mozambique and are delighted that the National Obesity Surgery Centre has decided to support such a great cause – the building of homes for some of the world’s most vulnerable children.”

The National Obesity Surgery Centre has seen a huge increase in the number of procedures and over the past 12 months now offers both gastric band and gastric balloon procedures at eight locations across the UK.
