Top European beach destinations

Following the European City Reputation Ranking, the online price comparison site trivago.co.uk has analysed the most popular beach destinations for the first time. In the ranking the 50 most popular European beach destinations in 2009 were investigated. The analysis took into consideration over 380,000 hotel reviews for more than 4,000 hotels.

Spain is the most popular European holiday destination with 15 cities in the Ranking, Italy has eleven cities, and France and Turkey both have five beach destinations. In the United Kingdom, Blackpool is the only town to make the top 50 with an average rating of 75.76 and is currently ranked 20, ahead of many popular Southern European hotspots.

Belek on the Turkish Riviera has the best reputation

With an average of 80.31 out of 100 points in the trivago hotel evaluation scale, the popular holiday resort Belek on the Turkish Riviera has the best online reputation. Belek is closely followed by health resort Binz in Germany with 80.11 points and the small Italian town Sorrento with 79.86 points. Hotels in the Portuguese town of Funchal on the Atlantic Island Madiera are also favoured by travellers; hotels in the port town have an average of 79.31 points and are fourth in the overall European Reputation Ranking. The Croatian city of Dubrovnik is in fifth place with an average overall rating of 78.77 points.

Mallorca’s party town El Arenal has the worst online reputation

Especially interesting are the results that show the popular Spanish party town El Arenal with the worst overall ratings. Benidorm on the Costa Blanca with 71.53 points is rank 46, San Antonio on Ibiza (70.52 points) rank 48, Lloret de Mar (69.52 points) on the Costa Brava the second to last and El Arenal (65.10 points) on Mallorca is in last place. On the other hand, Palma de Mallorca had very satisfied hotel guests and is in rank ten with 77.21 points. The hotels in Nice on the French Côte d´Azur have an average of 71.24 points and only reach rank 47.

Big differences on the Canary Islands and in Italy

The Canary Islands Gran Canaria and Tenerife have a total of five cities in the ranking. Costa Adeje (rank 15) has the best rating on Tenerife. Its neighbouring city Playa de las Américas with 74.09 points is in the middle of the Reputation Ranking in 32nd place, Puerto de la Cruz in the north of the island is in rank 43 with 71.96 points. The most satisfied are travellers to Gran Canaria to the beachside destination Playa del Inglés (74.45 points, rank 31). Maspalomas which is equally as popular is only at rank 38 with 72.98 points. The guest reviews for Italian hotels are also very different. Sorrento in the Italian area of Campania (79.86 points) is ranked third, Taormina (75.35 point) is at rank 25 and Sanremo (72.48 points) on the Riviera di Ponente in rank 42.

The top 5 beach destinations with the best online reputation

1. Belek, Turkish Riviera

Around half an hour from Antalya airport lies the Turkish holiday destination Belek. With an average of 80.31 points, the 55 reviewed hotels have the best ratings in the trivago reputation ranking. Belek is a popular destination for golfers and almost completely made up of hotel resorts. With 90 out of 100 points for 505 reviews, the five star resort Kaya Belek is the top rated hotel in Belek.

2. Binz, Germany

In the health resort Binz on Germany’s biggest island Rügen holidaymakers can find the most popular beach hotels in Germany. In the reputation ranking the seaside town on the East Sea is in second place with 80.11 points. 46 positively reviewed hotels in the city help the overall rating for Binz. With an average of 93 out of 100 points the hotel Kurhaus Binz is the top hotel in the area. A total of 282 reviews have been added about the 5 star superior hotel on the Baltic Sea beach.

3. Sorrento, Campania

With an average of 79.86 out of 100 possible points Sorrento on the Italian Amalfi coast is ranked the third most popular seaside destination. The best rated hotel in the area is Hotel Villa Oriana Relais, with a total of 398 hotel reviews with an average of 91 points. The 104 rated hotels in Sorrento help the small Italian city make it into the top five in the reputation ranking.

4. Funchal, Portugal / Madeira

Off the Portuguese coast holidaymakers can visit the flower island Madeira. A total of 93 hotels were rated in the port town of Funchal. An average rating of 79.31 points makes Funchal one of the most popular beach destinations in the ranking. An old manor house has the best reviews in the city. The five star Estalagem Quinta Da Bela Vista has 241 reviews with an average rating of 91 points.

5. Dubrovnik, Croatia / Dalmatia

One of the top five beach destinations with popular hotels also lies on the Mediterranean. In the Croatian town Dubrovnik the 47 reviewed hotels have an average rating of 78.77 points. The five star Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik helps the Dalmatia harbour city with 326 good and very good reviews that have an average rating of 89 out of 100 possible points on the trivago evaluation scale.

The trivago reputation ranking is a quantitative analysis of online reviews for all evaluated hotels in the 50 most popular European beach destinations on trivago. The 50 beach destinations are the most researched cities on all of the international trivago platforms in 2009. Altogether 382,186 reviews for 4,090 hotels are included in the overall analysis. Due to the high data set, deviations from five points on the scale represent a large qualitative difference. The extensive database has been created through cooperations with other online hotel review sites. trivago integrates hotel reviews from websites such as, tripadvisor, Holidaycheck and Booking.com.

Hotel reviews on trivago are shown on a scale from 1 to 100. In a review apart from an overall rating, extra ratings can be given for specifics, such as the room amenities, food and drinks, as well as the location. The reputation ranking closes the existing gap in the analysis of online hotel reviews. An increasing amount of touristic web content is generated by active Internet users.
