Music’s biggest names descend on Covent Garden’s Piazza

4th December 2009 Print

From 3rd of December, the UK’s hottest pop stars are taking part in a series of secret ‘Super Busking Gigs’ across two weeks, in Covent Garden’s Piazza, as part of Covent Garden’s ‘A Very Merry Christmas’ - a programme of free activity designed to spread Christmas cheer.

As an area synonymous with street performance and musical heritage, Super Busking has found its natural home in Covent Garden and was so successful last year that it has returned bigger and better for 2009.

Offering Londoners the perfect way to start the Christmas season, the Super Busking gigs will see chart-topping music artists, such as Jamie Cullum, Gabriella Cilmi and Stereophonics, turn up at Covent Garden’s Market Building for impromptu, live busking sessions, wowing the crowds and getting visitors into the festive spirit.

Confirmed so far:

- Friday 4th: The Feeling
- Saturday 5th: Gabriella Cilmi
- Wednesday 9th: Jamie Cullum
- Friday 11th: Ben’s Brother
- Monday 14th: Stereophonics

With many more artists still to be announced, the times of the gigs are remaining completely secret until four hours before the acts are due to play. Music fans can be the first to know about their favourite artists by following the below.

This year's Super Busking gigs look set to be every bit as impressive as last year, when crowds enjoyed some of the biggest names in pop including The Guillemots, VV Brown, The Saturdays, The Feeling and Keane playing live in the Piazza’s Market Building. So get your mitts on and your dancing feet ready to see more live acts performing at their very best in London’s Covent Garden.

Playing underneath Covent Garden’s beautifully crafted giant snowflake decorations, intertwined with a bespoke light installation by arts and design collective United Visual Artists, the Super Busking pop stars will get everyone in the festive mood and singing along!

A Very Merry Christmas in Covent Garden

As well as Super Busking, Covent Garden’s A Very Merry Christmas offers old-fashioned nostalgia. Recognizing it has been a hard year for most, A Very Merry Christmas will provide a warm, traditional and family-focussed programme of events that will warm the heart and soul, while spreading Christmas cheer to all.

From some of London’s most talented choirs filling the Covent Garden Market Building with uplifting sound and festive cheer, to a little bit of Lapland magic with real life reindeer petting on the West Piazza. For creative kids, Covent Garden will be hosting a series of fun workshops for free, with experts demonstrating everything from making Christmas decorations to decorating Christmas cupcakes (see appendix for full details). In the North Hall, stirring up imaginations and magical journeys will be professional story tellers, enchanting kids and adults alike with their candlelit tales of festive adventure.

Not only this, the Covent Garden Real Food Market will be the ultimate foodie stop-off for Londoners’ Christmas tables. From roasted chestnuts, to warm mulled wine to freshly baked gingerbread men on the Piazza, there will be lots of delicious treats to indulge in this Christmas.

All this set against enchanting decorations in the Market Building and on the Pizza. Visitors will be also be dwarfed by a 60ft tree and a 32ft giant topiary reindeer, greeting visitors who arrive to the Piazza via James Street, and 10ft topiary candy canes adorning the inside of the Market Building.
