Students at Cowplain Community School have been going loco for lizards in a creative writing competition launched by Taylor Wimpey Southern Counties, upon the discovery of reptiles at its Dukes Meadow development in Waterlooville.

The housebuilder asked pupils to create stories based upon the lives of the creatures at the site, and the adventures they encounter. Needless to say, the competition was a ‘toadal’ success with entries recounting the exciting tales of lizards, newts, rabbits and rats at Dukes Meadow.

Natalie Lodge, 12, won first prize of £30 in WHSmith vouchers for her perilous adventure of Lizzy the Lizard, after she left the safety of her mother’s nest. Second prize of £20 was awarded to Alice Arnold, 11, for her diary of a lizard’s life at Dukes Meadow, while Lucy Hurt won third prize of £10 for her moving story about a lonely lizard after his friends vanished. Accompanied by thoughtful sketches, these three stories really caught the judges’ eyes as they highlighted the conservation work that Taylor Wimpey is making at its site.

Taylor Wimpey’s regional engineering manager Saul Mead and sales consultant Karen Wolsgrove awarded the prizes to the three winners during an assembly at Cowplain Community School.

Pauline Fletcher, regional sales and marketing director, said: ‘’We’d like to thank Cowplain Community school for welcoming us earlier this year and creating such fantastic stories about our exciting reptile discovery at Dukes Meadow. We all ‘adder’ great time reading the stories and it was very difficult for us to pick a winner, due to the high standard of all the entries.

"The pupils had obviously thought very carefully about how to incorporate the site team’s conservation work into their characters’ lives and we were delighted to award the three winners their prizes. They all have very good imaginations and I wouldn’t be surprised if we’ve just found our next J.K Rowlings!"

Dukes Meadow is situated on the site of Old Park Farm, south of Hambledon Road in Waterlooville. When complete it will consist of 450 Eco Homes (homes which include a range of eco-friendly features such as energy and water conservation measures, solar power and sustainable building materials) and 24 live/work units (homes which can also be used as a business premise).
