DAF LF45 horsebox offers car-like driving characteristics

“It’s like driving my Bentley,” says Claire Ince, wife of football manager and former England star Paul of their new horsebox based on the DAF LF45 chassis. The DAF, which at 7.5 tonnes can be driven on a car licence, is being used to transport horses ridden by their daughter Ria in junior showjumping competitions throughout the North West and Midlands.

Features like a five-speed synchromesh gearbox and light yet positive steering all contribute to the car-like driving characteristics. With 160 horsepower (118 kW) and 600 Nm of torque from the 4.5 litre FR engine, the DAF is able to move off smoothly in all conditions, essential when carrying horses.

The luxury body by Profile Coachbuilders of Preston is in two halves. The rear half accommodates up to three horses and has a long spring-assisted ramp to provide a low angle of entry. Movable stainless steel partitions allow horses of different sizes to be carried in comfort and safety and make it easier to clean the compartment. Ample padding and securing rings protect the animals during transit.

A groom’s door connects directly into the front living compartment, which is like a luxury motorhome. It features a leather-upholstered dining area, fully-fitted kitchen with fridge/freezer, cooker and microwave, a bathroom with shower, washbasin and toilet, and enough beds for up to five people. The entertainment system includes satellite television and central heating is provided by a Truma gas powered system.

Underneath the living compartment and along the sideskirts of the body are storage compartments for tack and feed. An inbuilt ‘super silent’ petrol-engined generator provides power for the lighting and electrical equipment. Potable water is carried in a stainless steel 150 litre tank.

The body is in aluminium for low weight and long life with the Luton head and rear coving in fibreglass. Profile Coachbuilders’ director Mike Thompson says that the LF45 is a good chassis to build on with its flat topped chassis offering no obstructions and all pipe runs and wiring tucked neatly away.

The vehicle was supplied by DAF dealer North West Trucks who will maintain the vehicle at their Huyton workshops.
