DAF trucks work around the clock for ATL

Round the clock, seven day working of three new DAF CF85s by Derbyshire operator ATL (Ascott Transport Limited) will see each of the trucks covering around 275,000 miles (445,000 kilometres) a year.

The DAFs are on a constant trunking operation moving raw materials and finished products between Pirelli plants at Burton-on-Trent and Carlisle. It is demanding work that requires 12 drivers operating a double and split-shift system in order to optimise the use of the three trucks, which always run fully laden.

Peter Ascott, who manages the 50 year old family business with his brother Joey, said: “Experience with other DAF products in our fleet, particularly the 105 model with the same driveline and assessing the new DAF 2.8 rear axle differential, showed the CF85 to be both reliable and fuel efficient. Given the high mileages these trucks are doing, the availability of a two year, unlimited mileage warranty was also a decisive factor in our decision.

“On this highly intensive operation we can’t afford to have breakdowns and knowing that there are DAF dealerships at several points along the route gave us added confidence that these trucks would be right for the job.”

The new trucks are a 44 tonne mid-lift axle FTG model and a pair of two-axle FT models designed for 40 tonne operation. All three are powered by the 12.9 litre MX engine rated at 460 bhp and which is Euro 5 compliant. This is matched to the AS-tronic automated gearbox with long distance software for optimum performance. The FTG also has the MX engine brake fitted.

Although there’s no time for sleeping on this busy schedule, ATL’s drivers are enjoying a high level of comfort in the new DAFs because the company has specified the Space Cab. Along with ample space for their personal gear, there’s air conditioning and a multi-speaker radio/CD player.

“We did this with better residuals in mind,” explains Peter Ascott. “After two years on the Pirelli contract we’ll be putting these trucks into our general haulage fleet for a couple of years and that’s when the sleeper cab will get used. And even though we’ve paid more up front to have the Space Cab, when we come to move them on we can expect a better residual value.”

Externally the stylish appearance of the Space Cab has been enhanced by a full-width sun visor, roof spoiler and side collars. Sky Lights that match the contours of the roof line and fog lights in the bumper help finish off the truck. A sliding fifth wheel is fitted along with a reversing bleeper.

DAF dealer Imperial Commercials of Derby supplied the trucks with finance through PACCAR Financial. Routine maintenance will be carried out at Wheeltech’s well-equipped workshop also based at Foston Park off the A50 near Derby. Wheeltech’s fitters have received special training to carry out this work and Imperial Commercials will provide parts support.

Ian Wakefield, Retail Sales Manager for Imperial Commercials, added: “We are delighted to be business partners with ATL and look forward to delivering against their expectations and supporting them to deliver the service their customers need.”

Established in 1959, ATL is a fast-growing logistics company offering a range of transport and distribution services. Along with a fleet of 25 vehicles, the company has 250,000 square feet of warehousing and is a member of the Palletline network covering the DE postcode area.
