Taylor Wimpey supports children's road safety campaign

Hundreds of youngsters in High Wycombe can be safer on their journeys to and from school – after leading housebuilder Taylor Wimpey donated special high-visibility clothing in response to a road safety campaign.

Children’s safety has been high on the town’s agenda since September 2007, when five-year-old schoolboy Charlie Harris died after being hit by a car as he walked home from school with his mother.

In the wake of the tragedy, members of Wycombe’s Terriers and Amersham Hill Neighbourhood Action Group have launched a campaign to make the streets safer for youngsters – and they have already secured high-visibility tabards for pupils at Hamilton Primary School and Highworth Combined School and Nursery.

However, action group chairperson Emily Guiver was forced to seek further assistance after it transpired the tabards were too small to be worn by many older pupils. She contacted Taylor Wimpey, which recently began work on a new homes development in High Wycombe, and the housebuilder was happy to help.

Emily, whose four-year-old daughter is a pupil at Highworth, says: “We are extremely grateful that Taylor Wimpey has stepped in and provided these extra jackets to make sure that every pupil can be safe on their journey to and from school and also during school excursions.

“It’s reassuring to know that the company cares about children’s safety and is willing to take action to help the community.”

Taylor Wimpey has visited the schools to hand over 400 fluorescent high-visibility vests in time for the beginning of the new term.

Work is under way on Kingshill Grange, a Taylor Wimpey development of more than 200 homes on the former site of Buckinghamshire New University’s Wellesbourne Campus in Kingshill Road, High Wycombe.

Homes in the first phase of the development, which will include one and two-bedroom apartments through to three, four and five-bedroom houses, went on sale in the New Year.
