Opera singer Gio Compario to play Glastonbury

1st April 2010 Print

Gocompare.com's larger than life opera star Gio Compario is being linked with this year's Glastonbury Festival.

Gio, played by real life opera star Wynne Evans, has been credited with boosting Gocompare.com's customer numbers by more than 20 per cent since the TV adverts featuring the tenor popping up unexpectedly first appeared back in August 2009.

In recent years Glastonbury has played host to the likes of Shakin' Stevens, Rolf Harris and Dame Shirley Bassey, but this year it could be the turn of opera on the Pyramid Stage in the coveted Sunday afternoon slot.  The rumours connecting Gio with the festival first appeared on YouTube and twitter on Tuesday 30th March.

Wynne is one of the UK's leading tenors, having sung as a principal with most of the major opera houses and orchestras.  He has performed on some of the world's biggest stages including the Royal Opera House, the Royal Albert Hall and the 75,000 capacity Millennium Stadium, where Wynne famously responded to the New Zealand ‘Haka' with ‘Bread of Heaven'.  Wynne has subsequently gone on to sing at over 20 Welsh Rugby Internationals.

In 2007 Wynne was asked to sing the national anthem at the Calzaghie/Manfredo fight at the Millennium Stadium which had a television audience of over 150 million.

Nick Hall, Gocompare.com's Head of Marketing said, "Gio is a huge star and I'm not at all surprised to hear these rumours.  Obviously he has a number of commitments in the summer already, not least recording a new set of adverts for Gocompare.com, but I for one would love to see the big fella up there on the Pyramid Stage.  There aren't many acts that can divide an audience as quickly as Gio."
