Discount vouchers set firm in UK culture
The UK population now redeems over 2.4 million discount vouchers EVERY DAY - the equivalent of 1,692 vouchers every minute - and 25 per cent up on last year, according to research from Moneysupermarket Vouchers.
A trend that started as a way of saving money during the recession, the discount voucher is now offered by thousands of restaurants, retailers and service providers as a means of attracting and retaining customers. But, even as the economy shows signs of improvement, consumers appear to have no intention of giving up their discounts.
On average, UK consumers search online six times a week for the latest discounts and deals and one in five adults are self-proclaimed ‘voucher addicts'. Each UK adult now hands over at least three discount vouchers every eight weeks. Londoners are the nation's biggest voucher fans, redeeming one every fortnight.
Voucher users are currently saving themselves nearly £55 every month using online vouchers and codes - that's the equivalent of free cable TV and broadband or having their monthly mobile phone bill paid. One in seven canny coupon users clock up over £100 of discounts a month.
Sian Harrison, moneysupermarket.com's voucher expert says: "Since our launch a year ago, discount-hungry consumers have downloaded over 1 million offers from the site and our love affair with vouchers shows no sign of abating. With hundreds of new offers going live every week, canny consumers are set to reap record savings."
