One word to win the World Cup
England supporters haven’t had much to sing about over the last few World Cup tournaments. But the latest chant has been scientifically endorsed to bring home the glory in South Africa this summer.
A team of researchers at the Mindlab International Laboratory have discovered the perfect phrase for fans to shout is the Zulu word 'Cabanga', which means 'imagine'. Even former England and Arsenal defender Lee Dixon has backed the phrase!
The crowd can often have the effect of a 12th man – so over the past two months, scientists studied the influence fans can have on a game. Three stages of testing were conducted, during which players on the receiving end of the chants had their brains, heart rates and footballing skills monitored.
When the footballers heard 'Cabanga' being chanted they played better, and were able to do more keep-ups and headed passes.
Experts in sports performance suggest even thinking the word could have a positive effect on Fabio Capello’s men on the pitch.
A Facebook page is now calling upon the England supporters to help make an impact with positive thought and is on a mission to get 90,000 fans, the capacity of Wembley.
In the following video, Dixon, who’s no stranger to success after plenty of domestic and European honours and Scientist Dr David Lewis-Hodgson explain why Cabanga is so powerful. They show us footage of the word in action.
