To help kick-start this summer’s World Cup, Cinema City in Norwich will be screening some of the best-loved football films between 17th and 31st May, celebrating the patriotism, passion and politics that go hand in hand with the beautiful game.

The Goals on Film season begins on Monday 17th May, starting with a screening of Looking for Eric (15) at 8.50pm which tells the story of postman Eric Bishop whose life descends on a downward spiral, saved only by his hallucinations of football legend Eric Cantona. Shot entirely on location in Manchester and starring Eric Cantona himself, the film illustrates how the protagonist’s life is enhanced by his bizarre, imaginary encounters with his hero.

On Monday 24th May at 8.20pm, the season continues with documentary film Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait (PG). Telling the real-life story of world-class footballer Zinedine Zidane during the Real Madrid and Villareal clash at the Santiago Bernabau in 2005, the film is captured in real time by 17 synchronised cameras. The film looks closely at the game, during which Zidane was sent off as the result off a brawl. It’s a must-see for football fans and a deeply passionate movie which will whet the appetite for the forthcoming World Cup.

The final movie of the series is British film The Damned United (15), showing at 8.40pm on Monday 31st May. The film follows football manager Brian Clough during his 44 day stint in charge of Leeds United and explores his troubled relationship with the club’s former manager Don Revie. His harsh criticisms of the team upon his arrival pave the way for a rocky road, and the film cleverly weaves flashbacks from earlier in his career to demonstrate how relationships and opinions are formed.

The films are a must for any football fanatic, especially NCFC season ticket holders who will get an exclusive £2 discount off regular priced tickets. Tickets are priced at £8 or £6 for members, £5.50 for concessions and £4.50 for concessionary members. Bookings can be made via picturehouses.co.uk. There will also be offers available on the football screening nights, such as four bottles of beer for £10 (selected beers only).
