Samsung sponsors London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay
Samsung has announced that it would be a Presenting Partner for the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay (OTR), set to commence between May and July 2012 in the run-up to the Games. Samsung is passionate about the Olympic Games and through the relay aims to engage people, and especially young people, with sport via numerous related activities and programmes.
“As a Worldwide Partner, Samsung has a firm commitment to the Olympic Games and is once again thrilled to be a Presenting Partner for the Olympic Torch Relay,” said Gyehyun Kwon, Vice President and Head of Worldwide Sports Marketing at Samsung. “As an established leader in innovative mobile technologies that offer new and exciting experiences for everyone, Samsung aspires to use the symbolism and power of the Olympic flame to connect youth and sport in the pursuit of achievement.”
The announcement of Samsung’s Olympic Torch Relay sponsorship was made at a special event today in London, hosted by LOCOG, and attended by LOCOG Chair Sebastian Coe, and Minister for Sport and the Olympics Hugh Robertson. Some of the excitement of what is to come was captured through strong youth participation in the event, including that of one of Samsung’s youth ambassadors, Danny Mills Pappoe (16) from Chelsea Football Club’s youth team. As a global leader when it comes to supporting sport and athletics, Samsung aims to leverage its role as an Olympic Torch Relay Presenting Partner to highlight its dedication and passion for local communities and youth as part of its wider goal to make the world a better place.
The Olympic Torch Relay will pass within an hour’s journey of 95% of the population as it travels through the United Kingdom in the run up to the start of the London 2012 Olympic Games. As a Presenting Partner, Samsung will have the opportunity to nominate Torch Bearers to run with the Olympic Flame for a once in a lifetime experience. The relay will have a strong focus on youth as Samsung’s overall Olympic Games activation program will seek to involve young people to share and take part in the Olympic experience.
As the Olympic Torch Relay travels around the United Kingdom, it will be accompanied by Samsung who will play a key role in delivering the thrill and excitement of the relay to the people. Samsung will create community engagement programs to be announced in the coming months to ensure the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay has a real lasting legacy in the UK.
“LOCOG welcomes Samsung’s sponsorship of the Olympic Torch Relay and notes the commitment that becoming a Presenting Partner represents,” said Sebastian Coe, Chairman of LOCOG. “Samsung shares our commitment to engaging youth and encouraging their participation in all aspects of London 2012 – especially the Torch Relay.”
