Seven ways to educate pupils

What better way to learn about the finer points of Physics, Economics, English, Maths and 3D design than by building your own car?

That’s exactly what the pupils at Caterham School in Surrey will be doing over the next twelve months after taking delivery of a famous Caterham Seven sportscar in component form.

The British manufacturer’s local school is the latest to integrate the famous two-seater into the curriculum as part of a unique interactive education programme.

The car will be assembled by a team of pupils who have formed the Kit Car Club and teachers will have the opportunity to use the car and its components as teaching aids in other subjects across a wide range of ages.

James Ogilvie who, along with fellow teacher Ben Wilkinson, runs the Kit Car Club at Caterham School explains: “There’s a great deal the school can gain from having the Seven. For example, in physics, pupils can look at how the suspension system works, English lessons could include copywriting a brochure and other marketing material, and in economics the business of selling and exporting cars can be investigated.”

At the end of the year, the car will be sold by Caterham Cars creating sufficient funds to allow the school to repeat the project the following term at no further cost.

The scheme has already been running successfully at a school in Dorset for the past three years.
