Top tips on keeping your bike safe

28th June 2010 Print

TRACKER, the UK leader in stolen vehicle recovery warns that last year it recovered over £500,000 pounds worth of motorcycles and scooters, with low cost models just as likely to be a target for thieves. As the motorcycle season gets underway, TRACKER offers top tips on keeping that bike safe and sound.

“Our figures show that a bike or scooter worth £1,000 is just as likely to be on a thief’s shopping list as that prestige £10,000 model, so we urge all bikers to take steps to protect their pride and joy,” says Stephen Doran, managing director for TRACKER. “We advise bike and scooter owners to make it difficult for thieves by using a range of different security options, including chains, immobilisers and markers. However, having a tracking device installed offers owners that added level of security, increasing their chances of recovering their stolen bike.

“Motorcycle and scooter owners need to get into the habit of using their security devices. It may seem like a hassle, but it only takes a minute to put the bike in the garage or park in the back garden, or use a chain and padlock.   These simple steps can save hours of heartache and the expense involved in replacing a stolen bike. Always keep your keys safe, take care when parking and don’t slack on security when storing the bike at home. With just a few simple steps, owners can keep their bike safe all year round.”

TRACKER’S MOTORCYCLE AND SCOOTER SECURITY TIPS

Fit a tracking device to ensure recovery if the bike is stolen

Always use a steering lock and ensure you use a ‘U’ lock attached to a grounded anchor as this is a safer option and will take more effort to break

Keep your keys with you at all times and keep them safe at home

If you have a garage - use it!

Make sure your garage is fitted with strong locks

Mark the main areas of the motorcycle with your registration number or post code

Purchase a good immobiliser

Do not advertise your motorcycle to the world by leaving it on the drive. If you do not have a garage, cover it

When you park your bike in a public place, cover it and park in a well-lit area

Consider purchasing a TRACKER system. Bike owners are alerted if their bike is moved without the ignition being turned on, plus if the bike is taken, it can still be tracked if it is put in a container or van

TRACKER stolen motorcycle and scooter recovery systems work like an electronic homing device. A covert transmitter is hidden in one of several places around the motorcycle.

TRACKER offers the ultimate in protection as it detects when the bike is being moved without the ignition being turned on. The tracking device works even if the motorcycle is hidden in a container or transported on back of a van. TRACKER is the only vehicle tracking system operated by all 52 police forces in the UK, offering bike owners the ultimate in security.
