Gwyneth Paltrow highlights Vitamin D deficiency

Few will have failed to be amazed by Hollywood actress Gwyneth Paltrow’s revelations this month that she is suffering from Osteopenia, a precursor to osteoporosis.
How can someone who advocates and pursues such a healthy lifestyle be deficient in Vitamin D? For those on restricted diets or for who time in the sun is a challenge, a good quality supplement such as Calci-plus could be the answer.
Osteoporosis is not just about low dietary calcium. Bone health is dependent on other nutrients in addition to calcium, i.e. vitamin D, magnesium, vitamin K and Boron being the most important. Without vitamin D, calcium may not be absorbed by the body effectively.
Vitamin D is difficult to obtain from foods but easy to obtain from sunlight exposure. Vitamin D deficiency is seen in people who have little exposure to sunlight, often the elderly, disabled or those who need to cover up for religious reasons. However in these times when skin cancer is on the increase many people are covering up or wearing creams which block out the sun, stopping vitamin D formation in the skin.
In Northern latitudes (such as the UK) during winter months the wavelength of sunlight does not allow for vitamin D formation. Therefore having vitamin D in a calcium supplement is important for bone health. Vitamin D3 is the best form of vitamin D as this is the form of vitamin D that is produced naturally in the skin by sun exposure, so supplementing D3 is preferable to D2.
Calci-plus is an easy to take, highly palatable tablet, that delivers 100% of the recommended daily dose of calcium and vitamin D3 for optimal bone health. It is sugar free and easily chewable with a natural citrus flavour, and much less of the chalkiness associated with other calcium supplements, that many people find unpleasant.
Two Calci-plus tablets deliver 800mg of calcium, 5mcg of Vitamin D and 250mg of Magnesium. Calci-plus is available in boxes of 30 at a RRP of £4.99, and can be bought from all good pharmacies and health food shops or purchased direct from Forum Health on calci-plus.co.uk.
