Toshiba 3D enabled TVs

5th September 2010 Print

Toshiba announce its first collection of 3D enabled Edge LED backlight TVs, the WL768 series. The three new 3D-TV models offer 3D Hollywood picture quality thanks to a range of new technologies developed by Toshiba, which include Intelligent 3D and 3D Resolution+. Combining first-class technology with a sleek and attractive design by Toshiba design team in collaboration with JACOB JENSEN DESIGN studio, any WL768 series TV is guaranteed to be the focal point of any living room. Toshiba’s 3D TVs with screen sizes of 102cm (40''), 117cm (46'') and 139cm (55'') will come to market in early fourth quarter 2010 throughout Europe.

Combining premium 3D technologies with premium design

"The 3D capable Toshiba WL768 series goes further than simply bringing 3D into the living room - It has been our aim to offer more with the WL768 series by combining its 3D capability with its first-class picture quality," said Sascha Lange, Head of Marketing, Consumer Products, Europe. "We also wanted to create a stunning design to match the premium technologies packed into the device - this was why we partnered with the renowned JACOB JENSEN DESIGN studio"

Designed in collaboration with JACOB JENSEN DESIGN

The designers created a modern, elegant and super-slim (only 2,89cm thick) design with high-quality materials such as glass and metal brought together in a perfect harmony of form and function. An innovative neck design between the pedestal and the body gives an astounding impression, as if the TV is ‘floating’. Furthermore, instead of integrating buttons on the side, the WL768 series models are controlled via a touch panel that is seamlessly integrated into its frameless glass front.

Excellent picture quality in 3D and 2D mode

The excellent 3D picture quality seen on the Edge LED backlight display with its high dynamic contrast ratio of 7,000,000:1, is built on the calculation power of the MetaBrain processing unit and the approved picture and motion enhancement technologies like Resolution+ and Active Vision M200HD Pro. The 200Hz technology not only provides smooth and judder-free motion even in fast moving scenes, but also offers a fast response time that is required to achieve an adequate separation of pictures reaching the left and right eye. To achieve brilliant picture quality, also in 3D mode, Toshiba embedded many more innovative technologies to provide for an intense cinematic 3D experience.

- Active shutter technology: The WL768 series uses the active shutter technology to maintain Full HD picture quality when switched to 3D mode. The active shutter glasses (Compatible Toshiba 3D Glasses) are synchronised with the TV’s refresh rate via an IR emitter which is fully integrated into the TV.

- Intelligent 3D: To compensate for the effects of using the active shutter glasses, such as the loss of brightness due to the alternate darkening of the viewer's eyes, and the change in colour contrast, all WL768 devices feature Toshiba’s Intelligent 3D. This application automatically optimizes the TV screen’s brightness and colour reproduction accordingly, as soon as it detects a 3D signal.

- 3D Resolution+: In order to be equipped for the 3D TV broadcasting of tomorrow, Toshiba has refined its approved 2D picture enhancement technology Resolution+. Since digital TV provides only limited bandwidth; and will most likely be broadcast in ‘side by side’ technology, that uses a single 1080p frame to transmit the picture for the left and the one for the right side by side, the resolution and the perceived sharpness of 3D programmes are lower than e.g. those from a Blu-ray 3D disc. By using complex algorithms, 3D Resolution+ analyses each single image and improves edge detail and texture in near-real time to generate a 3D image at near Full HD quality from a side by side input signal. The result is a significantly sharper and more detailed 3D TV experience.

Easy and seamless integration into the home network

The WL768 series comes well equipped to easily connect to a home network. Windows 7 compatibility allows content to be streamed to the TV by clicking the “play to” menu option on Windows Media Player on a laptop equipped with Windows 7. The WL768 series comes embedded with a WLAN interface that supports an easy setup of a wireless network connection. Two USB ports that support a wide selection of formats including DivX HD, MKV, JPEG and MP3 and four HDMI ports to receive uncompressed data streams from various sources complement the comprehensive choices of interfaces.

Lean back and enjoy brilliant pictures and vibrant sound

The impressive visual 3D experience is complemented by full and vivid sound provided by powerful speakers. To enhance bass reproduction the models feature an integrated subwoofer with an output of 10 Watts, and 20 Watts in the 55’’ model. The Audyssey EQ equalizing system compensates for acoustic irritations caused by dominant or under-represented frequencies and delivers a vibrant and well-balanced sound across the whole listening area.
